Jan Kowalczyk, coming from Cieszyn region, a sportsman, the greatest talent in the post-war history of Polish horsemanship. The Olympic champion and the runner-up – Moscow 1980.

Born on December 18, 1941 in Drogomyśl.
A participant of three Olympic Games: Mexico 1968, Munich 1972 and Moscow 1980. The Olympic Champion in show jumping and the runner-up (silver medal) at the Nations Cup of OG in Moscow (1980). From among 126 individual wins of Poles at CHIO-CSIO in the period 1956-79, 44 belong to Jan Kowalczyk.
Seventeen-times Champion of Poland (Three Days’ Event – 2x; show jumping – 15x). He was the best rider at CHIO 1965 in Olsztyn (on Ronceval and Drobnica). In Aix-la-Chapelle (also during CHIO 1966), on Drobnica, the competition by choice, he overcame all famous world riders (Mancinelli, Pessoa, Steenken, Goyoaga).
Wiktor Olędzki: “Jan is a very difficult character, he needs a coach using a strong-arm method (…). But nobody has such predispositions to work with horses as Jan.
Jan Kowalczyk died in Warsaw on February 24, 2020 at the age of 79. He was buried on March 4, 2020 with the Military Honorary Assist in the family grave at the Northern Communal Cemetery / Wólka Węglowa / in the quarters E-IX-3-2-1.

XXII Summer Olympic Games – Moscow 1980
The Olympic Games where Polish horsemanship achieved the best results. 29 July 1980 – silver team medal (Jan Kowalczyk – Artemor; Marian Kozicki – Bremen; Janusz Bobik – Szampan; Wiesław Hartman – Norton). 03 August 1980 – individual gold Olympic medal – Jan Kowalczyk on Artemor.
